NEW RV Travel adventures through Utah and Nevada to share and new adventures ahead…
I’m back “on the road” after several months “wintering” in Parowan, Utah. Many years ago I read Jack Kerouac’s book “On the Road.” Not only has the phrase stayed with me, the fundamental message in Kerouac’s novel struck a chord.
Every cloud has a silver lining… My recent stay over this past winter in Parowan, Utah
I’m not going to go into great detail (at least not at this time), but allow me to say that every time “Natures God” (interpret that however you wish) throws challenges your way, He also gives you Blessings.
Allow me to state at the outset, I LIKE Parowan, the people in it, and Painted Hills RV Resort (including its owners.) Scott (at Painted Hills) runs a great resort for RV’ers. My link above takes you to a post that details Painted Hills RV Resort, along with much of what there is to do and explore in Southern Utah.
I also enjoyed working with my ski students on the snow at Brian Head Ski Area. Even though SOME of Brian Head’s leadership fell FAR short of all expectations, I STILL enjoyed ski instructing this winter. It was my relationship with my students and much of the instructional staff that made the experience. I hope to continue teaching students on snow in the future. It’s great seeing my students progress (significantly in most cases) as I work to improve their technique and overall enjoyment of the sport. I also enjoyed coaching other instructors and helping them to learn and improve their craft.
Exploring Southern (and Central) Utah – as always from an RV’ers perspective (and more)…
Speaking of exploring Southern Utah AND “the silver lining”, one of my colleagues in ski school became over the course of the winter, a lifelong friend, and frankly one of my best friends in my life. You’ll see Isaac in some photos and videos as we embarked upon MANY adventures between February and April 2025.

Hiking Zion, Bryce, Kanab and more…
Isaac and I became great friends as we broke bread after long days teaching skiing. We then started to plan what became numerous adventures. As we hiked, explored, and traveled about lifelong destinations including the Parowan Petroglyphs, Zion National Park (and Kolob Canyon), Bryce Canyon, Sand Hollow, Kanab hikes, The Swell (including multiple hikes and explorations), Goblin Valley, Little Horse Hike, Cathedral Gorge (Nv.), and Echo Canyon (Nv.). we developed a strong and lasting connection. Many of the bigger hiking days including Zion, Bryce and Little Horse exceeded 5 miles of hiking each day. Some up to 7 miles in a day!

Each of these destinations and parks WILL receive its own post here on RVAcrossAmerica.net. Most (if not all) frankly DESERVE to be on YOUR bucket list. As a fellow RV’er, I (of course) include RV related info in each post. Thus far, as of this writing (April 22, 2025), my Zion post is (nearly) complete. Our visits (yes multiple) to Zion were unique in that we visited Zion in February! Winter in this National Park is a truly special (and UNcrowded) time. Please DO visit my post and let me know what you think.

As I travel across Nevada and into Idaho, I will (of course) share more stories from my current travels AND prepare posts for each of the Southern Utah parks and regions we visited. I can only hope and pray that I’ve been as good a friend to Isaac as he’s been to me.

Today’s post is sort of a capstone (maybe) to our current journeys as I travel farther from southern Utah. Further, Isaac is about to embark upon a rigorous and exciting career – one he’s VERY suited for and FULLY capable of becoming one of the top in his field as he progresses.
RV NEWS
I have RV news to report and discuss with you in upcoming posts. You’ll hear about the current state of the RV industry and sales of campers; about a class action lawsuit against a BIG player in the RV industry and finally, a sad story about one gentleman who did just about everything WRONG – and what WE can learn from HIM. Look for these topics in upcoming posts.
Current RV Travel Destination and recent explorations

After departing from Parowan, my first travel day (April 15th) was a brief journey west across the Nevada border to Echo Canyon State Park. I spent three nights and was joined by Isaac for part of my time there. He and I explored Pioche, Nv. (a little) and then Cathedral Gorge – EXTENSIVELY. We both recorded some great video and took tons of photos.

Both Cathedral Gorge and Pioche deserve individual posts to share what’s there and a bit about the region overall. This is the high desert with elevations around 5000 – 6000 ft.

Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge
Part of this post was written at Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge. Situated in the desert at about 3500 ft. it truly is an oasis in a truly arid region with far less than 10 inches of rain experienced annually. As in every arid region, overnight lows get quite cold. Mornings have been in the mid-30’s. In contrast, temperatures rise by mid-afternoon as high as 80F!
A final thought at the beginning…
As I begin my RV travels this Spring, I feel renewed and rejuvenated. I owe much to my friend as he in his own way helped me to renew my outlook and perspective. I also feel rejuvenated as miles and miles of hiking – and keeping up with a young person will tend to do that for you!

In the coming weeks, I plan to bring to you (hopefully) compelling stories packed with useful information about where we traveled throughout southern and central Utah, and now where I explore as I “retread” a few familiar places and then onto exploring new (and very remote) locales.
I’ve been paddling in Pahranagat Lake knowing there’s no lakes near Goldfield, Nevada. Goldfield is a return visit. I’ve been there before (December 2020), but it DESERVES a return visit!
MUCH MORE SOON… Oh and…
It IS RV’ing season. Did you know I offer a Concierge RV Buying and Selling Service? I’m an experienced “RV Insider” who serves as “Your guide by your side – AND also has your back” through one of the largest transactions in your life. Contact me to learn more.
AND… if you’re already an RV’er and about to go “on the road”, here are “time tested and proven” RV Accessories I personally use and recommend…
I look forward to your posts, EVERY single one. I like to relive and review your thoughts to some of the places we traveled (when we RV’d for 15 years). We enjoyed Cathedral Gorge SP, Echo Canyon so those will be special to me. Don’t miss the iris blooming at Kershaw-Ryan while you are in the neighborhood!
Thanks for your kind words. Next time I’m over by Echo Canyon, I’ll stop into Kershaw-Ryan. I’m now in Goldfield… so, new adventures! And more posts coming soon.
Al
Hi Alan, I know we did just what you always said to “try not to do”, that was to fixate on a very specific make and model. We just wanted to thank you for locating exactly what we were looking for that included all the bells and whistles and I mean ALL at a price far far below what we had been considering. Thanks again for all your help and tutelage. Dave and Sandy Allem
Dave and Sandy,
