Great Camping Experiences In and Around Helena Montana

Great Camping Experiences – Helena Montana

Helena, the Capital of Montana is situated in a valley surrounded by spectacular mountains and many lakes – including the headwaters of the Missouri River. Waters that resemble a lake – especially where the river widens and water flow slows to a crawl. Ideal for boating, kayaking and canoeing (with what I’m told is spectacular fishing all along the way.)

********don’t miss the NEW banner above featuring COACH NET – a service NO RV’er should be without!******

I had the opportunity to explore the region at length during autumn 2015. Allow me to share the many great camping and recreating sites in the “greater Helena region” along with some great things I learned about Helena itself!

Let’s start here…

I hope the video above gave you a sense of where I was – towards that end, AllStays is a service I have found as an RV’er and traveler to be of great value when researching and planning my journey. As I mentioned in my video, one of my goals this autumn was to test out my new solar panels – you can review my findings here. Lastly, as I mentioned in the video above, I was in the region to get some repairs done on my landing gear, I found D&D RV to be quite satisfactory to complete the work and highly recommend their shop.

Court Sheriff Campground

Court Sheriff Campground (mentioned and located in the above video) is definitely in the running for the “perfect campsite” that I’ve been searching for this autumn. Accessed by crossing a dam, about 20 miles east of Helena, the sites are spacious – and in late September, FREE! When I visited (late Sep/early Oct), days were still warm (around 70) and nights were staying above freezing. The campground was 85% empty, and people were largely free to do their own thing. Me? I kayaked! And there is LOTS of water and shoreline to explore, along with many coves.

Helena Lake

Helena Lake is a small lake accessible within minutes of downtown Helena. It is a naturalists paradise, birding preserve, and intended for use by small motor boats, kayaks and canoes. I put in with my kayak on a few occasions while staying at the Lincoln Road RV Park – one of the two full hookup RV parks located just north of Helena. Lincoln Road RV Park is a nice park, located within minutes of the interstate, yet quiet at night. It provides easy access in and out for big rigs and after October 1, rates are very reasonable, and spaces are plentiful. The other park, Helena RV park is located 5 minutes south (closer to town) of Lincoln Road RV Park. Helena RV Park is an old KOA, I did not stay there, but I did visit and found the park “acceptable”, but navigating it for a big rig would be tight, and rates were high.
