It was 84F 36 hours earlier…then I awoke to HEAVY SNOW! (Casper, Wy. – Late May 2026)

Truth be told, snow happens in Casper Wyoming at almost any time of year. So, when I wake up on May 18 and see it “nuking” outside my camper, I should NOT be surprised!

THIS YEAR however, when temperatures reached the 70’s in early March and virtually no snow fell in Casper all winter, experiencing TWO accumulating snows in LATE May within 4 days seemed a bit weird!

May 18 – Casper – the view from my camper’s door

The snow on May 18 lingered much of the morning and even in the afternoon, temperatures struggled to reach 40F. Then, after a chilly rain on May 22, by early evening, it changed to MORE heavy snow and coated the ground (and everything else) white again!

Casper was not even “ground zero” for this latest snowstorm. Interstate 80 near Rawlins was closed for TWO days due to heavy snow. Further, the Snowy Mountains (between Laramie and Saratoga) reported upwards of 30 INCHES of snow!

AND… Thank God for this snow! It provides well needed moisture for the region and HOPEFULLY we’re not done with the snow yet!

Yep, I’m in Casper – for a short time

I’m taking a few weeks here in Casper to visit former colleagues when I worked for a now defunct RV store that was run by an idiot. Casper is a very livable city. I like biking here, the coffee shops, even the climate at this time of year is reasonable.

Snow is not what I was expecting

I’m writing this on May 27, and it appears to be done snowing, but really, it *could* happen again. I believe August is the only month where Casper has not recorded snow ever. That said, most days are in the 70’s now with overnight lows in the 40’s.

May 23 – Snow is hanging in there on Casper Mountain!

At least at this time of year, snow does not stick around very long! But a few days after the 18th, there was still snow up on Casper Mountain, a prominent ridge that rises about 3000 ft. above the 5000 ft. plateau that Casper sits upon. As late as May 25, there were still traces of snow visible on Casper mountain.

Upcoming Travels

In a few weeks, I will move on to Saratoga (Wyoming) – a town situated at 7300 ft., highlighted by classic and historic hot springs. There is also some good kayaking in the region as Saratoga is on the west side of the Snowy Mountains. Saratoga has become an annual destination almost since I started this journey in 2011. At this time of year, you can typically cross the “Snowies” and get to Laramie.

After Saratoga, the script for this summer has yet to be written. Much will depend upon how expensive diesel is at that time. Regardless of the destination(s) I choose, at some point I will return to the Silver Valley of North Idaho for another ski season at Lookout Pass.

A relatively new way to save on RV Travel

Several years ago, I joined Boondockers Welcome. I liked the concept and the membership price. The concept was simple, they created a network of hosts who opened their property to RV travelers for shorts (1 to a few night) stays on their property.

THEN, Boondockers Welcome got bought out and I was not in love with the company who purchased them. Now, there’s a “new kid on the block” – RV Overnights has over 1200 host locations and a membership that is much more straightforward than “others.” I just joined and as I review their locations and host sites, I get the same “vibe” as existed with my fond memories of Boondockers Welcome.

RV Overnights charges about 50 bucks per year, so I figure with just a few visits, it will more than pay for itself! I will let you know where I stay and how it goes.

Posting What’s On My Mind (and perhaps yours as well!)

I have several posts coming up that may be of interest.

  • Exploring Nevada during Spring 2025 – first with Isaac then on my own as I headed north

  1. Thanks Alan,
My daughter and her husband recently relocated to Castle Rock CO. From The DFW area in TX. We lived in Powderhorn CO previously at 9100′ elev but are currently in TN. We don’t want to live in Co due to the political lean and taxes for Retirees.
We are considering moving to Casper to be closer to our Grands as they have decent Medical. My wife has had 2 strokes previously and I have had an Aortic Valve replaced and Banner gets pretty good grades on both. I hear the wind is the biggest complaint people experience vs late snows. I appreciate your overall opinion on Casper.
Bob and Janie. We just celebrated our 48th Anniversary. I turn 71 and my Bride 70 this year. But we still love boondocking in our truck camper.
    Safe travels.
